Nothing adds ambience to a room like a fireplace. The cozy, warm feeling is unlike anything else and is entirely rustic and natural. With the invention of gas fireplaces comes the possibility for any room to have a hearth. But a fireplace is more than looks. They also add heat and light to the area.

Fireplaces can be vented or non-vented. Which type you require depends on the spot or room where it will be installed. Vented fireplaces have a vent through the roof, an outer wall of the home or an existing chimney. This allows the fire to breathe using oxygen from outside as well as get rid of any carbon monoxide. Non-vented fireplaces are gas powered and need no vent for the fire to breathe. Less carbon monoxide is produced, but the fire feeds off the inside air.

What we want to talk about here, though, is a new contemporary look for your fireplace. Usually, you think about a log burning in there. A few years ago, the invention of gas logs made it possible to have that classic look without the cleanup of ash afterward. These gas logs burn cleaner as well, so there is no carbon monoxide emissions or carbon buildup to worry about.

One option for this is to use fireballs in place of a log. Fireballs are made of the same material that ceramic fire logs are so they are just as safe. Fireballs are available in many different sizes and colors. Most sets will include several different sizes of spheres and semi-spheres. These can be piled or arranged on any way you wish.

Another option is a new idea on the market called fire shapes. Made of the same material as fire balls or logs, these are made into geometric shapes. Most commonly, they will be cylinders, squares, cones and/or rectangles. Again, you can place these in any configuration you like.

Fire balls and fire shapes can be combined for a unique look to your fireplace. Add some fire glass and your custom built fire is complete. The only real difference is that a vented fireplace is able to have the flames actually contacting the log, balls or shapes. The resulting carbon monoxide is sent out the flue or vent.

Vent free fireplaces need to have the flames in less contact with the fire shapes or fire balls. The result is less carbon build up, less clean up, less carbon monoxide production and a few more btu output.

The fire balls or shapes are arranged on a burning plate. The plates also come in different sizes, usually from 18″ up to 48″. The flame originates beneath the plate and up through or around the fire balls or shapes. The amount of contact with the fire balls or shapes affects the carbon monoxide emissions. Gas fireplaces are equipped with an oxygen depletion sensor so if the room oxygen gets too low, an alarm sounds. This lets you know that the flame needs to be turned down.

Fire balls or fire shapes can be arranged differently to achieve a unique look for your fireplace. The output is a maximum of about 40,000btu which can warm a pretty good sized area. There is always a gas valve that allows the user to adjust the flame as necessary and a thermocouple that will monitor both the temperature in the room as well as the presence of the pilot light.

Using fire balls or fire shapes is a way to get that contemporary look for your room with a source of heat and light on the side. When the fireplace is not on, it looks like any other fireplace, waiting to serve your needs. When the gas is turned on and the fireplace is activated, the result is a beautiful ambience. The shapes or balls can play with the shadows cast by the flames.

Don’t worry about the fire balls clashing with your room d?cor. They are available in colors that match just about any room. Use a contrasting bed of glass fire to accent the color of the fire balls or fire shapes. Imagine the look of red balls or shapes on a bed of black glass with a live flame licking around it.
